Close to 70% of all high definition discs sold in quarter 1 ‘07 were blue-ray. This is WAY ahead of rival format HD-DVD. Blue-ray which was released months after HD-DVD, now clocks a sale of 1.2 million discs as against 937,500 HD-DVDs. With the patronage of major studios like Sony, Blue-ray surely has a distinct edge over HD-DVD. More proff that HD-DVD will bit the dust soon.

That is a great call because it took DVD took almost a decade to surpass VCRs in US homes. I think this guy needs to re-evaluate how stupid he sounds. Most of us do not have HDTV or TV’s that would see the difference with blu-ray. How fast do you think it’ll be before everyone replaces their TV with HD quality ones? Three Years is way too short, especially with the economy due for a recession it’ll be longer than three years. DVD isn’t going anywhere!

This might have something to do with selling one million PS3’s, although maybe they have not read the general online consensus of the PS3 yet. No one wants one, and everyone who already has one, isn’t talking about it because of sheer embarrassment for having blown quite a bit of cash on a system with no good games. Maybe Sony should try reading some online forums as well and see how negative the Blu-ray talk is. I really hope both formats fail, but realistically there is no way for anyone to declare they are the winner at this point.

Even with far fewer studios currently supporting them, HD-DVD still has considerably more releases (see here) and is much more affordable. DT originally predicted BluRay to win, partially because of what the PS3 would do for it but yes, it look like they were wrong. That was before both the price of the PS3, and the delays, were announced. Given the current circumstances of the PS3, it is a complete joke of a system that no one really wants.

For the beginners I thought I would post basic acronyms / quick definitions for what will be used here.

HDCP - High-bandwith Digital Content Protection - The encryption of data over digital connections.
MPAA - Motion Picture Association of America - the trade organization representing the major movie companies.
AACS - Advanced Access Content System - the DRM infection used for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
DVI - Digital Visual Interface - Precursor to HDMI, found on many older HDTV’s. Many DVI connections are not HDCP compliant, making them worthless for Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
BD+- an addition to AACS for Blu-ray discs, that provides additional restrictions to what you can do.
RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America - trade organization representing the major music companies.
DRM - Digital Restrictions Management - technology to restrict what you can do with media you purchase.
MMC - Mandatory Managed Copy - a theoretical way for you to make a legal copy of a movie.
HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface - A digital connection found on most new HDTV’s, all HDCP compliant.
ICT - Image Constaint Token - Downsamples HD output to standard resolution when hooked up over analog / component cables.

No one knows yet how well MMC will work, if all movies will in fact allow it, what it will cost you to make your “mandatory” copies, what you will be able to do with these copies, but I do think it’s an important feature to have if you’re going to drop $1k on a shiny new player. If you must jump on the bandwagon, this is yet another reason to wait for the dust to settle.

Today they announced that the PlayStation 3 will be delayed until November. Look’s like everyone’s hope for a cheap Blu-ray player sometime soon just went bye…bye. Supposedly Sony is working on some extra security features to protect the games from being copied (boring). I’m sure they’ll still lose money initially on PS3 hardware sales, but at that point Blu-ray will have been on the market for 6 months so their manufacturing costs will have come down significantly. We’ll see definitely see what happens in the next coming months!

Toshiba has said they are likely to delay the release of their players to match the launch of the first content, though they haven’t officially announced it yet. Also, Toshiba is apparently only shipping 10,000 total HD-DVD players for its intial launch, indicating they aren’t exactly expecting crazy sales. Of course, with only three movies at launch, it shouldn’t be too unbelievable.

HD-DVD’s first-to-market advantage over Blu-ray is getting smaller and smaller, and now looks like they’ll beat Blu-ray to market by only one month. (Blu-ray is currently scheduled to launch May 23). This is unfortunate because if I had to choose between HD-DVD or Blu-ray, I would take HD-DVD any day of the week. I mean, considering all the crap Sony has pulled, I just don’t care for them anymore.
